Nvidia Expands UK AI Footprint with Major GPU Deployment and Partnerships
Nvidia (NVDA) is significantly expanding its AI infrastructure in the UK with plans to deploy tens of thousands of GPUs, marking one of its largest international projects to date. CEO Jensen Huang framed the initiative as part of a 'sovereign AI' strategy, emphasizing local development to bolster industry, science, and employment.
The centerpiece of this effort is Stargate UK, a collaboration between Nvidia, Nscale, and OpenAI. The facility aims to become Europe's most advanced AI hub, eventually delivering up to 50,000 GPUs. Nscale will oversee the rollout of 60,000 Nvidia chips, with operations slated to begin in 2026. OpenAI's Sam Altman highlighted the project's potential to accelerate scientific research and economic growth.
Microsoft (MSFT) is also making a substantial AI investment in the UK, building the country's most powerful supercomputer in Loughton. The system will utilize 24,000 of Nvidia's Grace Blackwell Ultra chips and run on Microsoft's Azure cloud platform, providing cutting-edge resources to local researchers and businesses.
